The Washtenaw County Democratic Party gathers food for the hungry at all functions (county committee, executive committee, forums, etc.). The need in our community is growing and donations to food banks are not keeping up.
We collect nonperishable canned (no glass) and dry goods, and fresh produce (good condition with the skin intact). Suggestions include tuna, beef stew, hearty soups, chili, canned spagetti, baby food, rice, dry beans, peanut butter, cereal, dried milk, and pasta.
Cash donations to the WCDP for designated for "WCDP Fights Hunger" are also welcome, and will be donated to local food banks, including the great local organization, Food Gatherers.

Food Gatherers is Washtenaw County's food bank and food rescue program. Since its inception in 1988, Food Gatherers has distributed tens of millions of pounds of food for the community.
Food Gatherers provides thousands of meals a day, and brings the food to more than 150 community programs serving our neighbors - mostly families and children - in need of food.
At its August 2009 meeting the WCDP Executive Board adopted a resolution to support Food Gatherers. All WCDP members and supporters are asked to bring nonperishable foods to WCDP meetings and these items will be delivered to Food Gatherers.
Also, members and supporters are urged to work directly with Food Gatherers in volunteer activites. The Vice-Chair for Outreach will review additional options such as a food drive or group volunteer events.
The landmark study Hunger in America 2010, released in 2010 by Food Gatherers and Feeding America, reports that more than 43,900 people - including more than 14,000 children and 6,500 seniors - receive emergency food each year through Food Gatherers' network of emergency food pantries and meal sites.
Please bring your food donations to any of our events and functions, contribute directly, or contact Vice-Chair for Outreach Kathy Wyatt at katherineawyatt@aol.com or 734-678-8623 for more ways you can help.
